Are you aware that greyhounds make great family pets?

Meet Daisy, the latest addition to a friends family.

Daisy came into Lauren's life as a six year old Rescue Greyhound. She socialises well with other dogs and humans, uses the doggie door to go outside, loves sleeping on the sofa, and travels well in the car. Daisy has sleep-overs at Grandma's house, has spent a day at the office with Lauren, and has even attended Doggie Daycare.

Indeed, Daisy does all the things that we expect from dogs, including relishing attention from her human.

How often do you see an ad in the paper saying "Greyhound-Free to a Good Home"?

Pretty regularly, am I right ?

Every year tens of thousands of perfectly healthy greyhounds are killed when they are no longer wanted by their racing industry owners. Others are offered as "giveaways" on websites such as Gumtree Online Classifieds. Unfortunately, many of these greyhounds are sourced for hunting wild pigs and rabbits and are also used as "bait dogs" for dog fighting rings.

Female greyhounds are often acquired for cross breeding with larger dogs, such as Bull Mastiffs, as it is believed that the pups will be fast and strong, and therefore good hunting and fighting dogs. Sadly, this often ends in physical injury or even death to the dams as they aren't big enough to breed such large pups.

Gumtree Greys is a Non Profit organisation that rescues and rehomes greyhounds all along the East Coast of Australia, focusing primarily on those advertised on Gumtree, from regional pounds, and from regional owners.

On Sunday, 1st of May, the passionate volunteers from Gumtree Greys are holding a fundraising event at Wellers Hill Bowls Club, Sexton Street, Tarragindi.

Barks and Bowls commences at noon and includes games of barefoot bowls, a free sausage sizzle, raffles, stalls and DJ. I believe there may even be a few greyhounds on site to provide some authenticity- and licks.

Bookings are essential, with the entry fee of $25.00 per person to be paid at Trybooking . Each booking will go into the draw for the Lucky Door Prize which is even more fun.

All proceeds will go towards the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of greyhounds within Brisbane - Greyhounds just like Daisy.

  • Thankyou to Lauren for sharing her beautiful photos of Daisy.
