When you just have to have a coffee, wouldn't it be great if that simple purchase were also an ethical, sustainable choice?

Teneriffe locals will have that option once Barko & Co opens at the riverside engine room building on Macquarie Street next Tuesday morning, 7 May.

Coming soon! The cafe from the boardwalk

Barko & Co is a family-owned business that applies sustainable and ethical practices across the board in delivering Australian cafe faves 'with a healthy kick'. The menu, initially offering breakfast, brunch and lunch, will focus on local produce and cater for vegans, vegetarians and gluten-frees.

The coffee itself is also ethically sound. 'Our coffee comes from micro-lot suppliers - the local resident farmers, not the big companies,' says owner Raex Murillo. 'And even our coffee cups are ethical, made from coffee bean husks.'

So there's more to enjoy more than just Acai bowls and smashed avo. Barko & Co is passionate about sustainable living, ethical business and social enterprise. To back up their passion, the Murillo family has solid experience in operating businesses that align with their social values.

You might already know Barko & Co's parent company, Mr Coffee's. Run by Raex's parents, Mr Coffee's supplies ethically sourced beans to the coffee carts at Rocklea Markets and looked after the now-closed Eagle Farm markets as well.

And Raex developed a range of sustainable textiles made from plant by-products, while sister Vanessa upcycles coffee fruit extract into healthy snack bars, utilising the waste in coffee production. With proven experience in social enterprise behind the wheel, Barko & Co is an exciting concept.

Community is also important to the Murillos, and Raex plans to create a social hub for the local area in the cafe. 'Once we're established, we want to host community events', says Raex. Barko & Co is partnering with Communify, an independent Brisbane organisation that delivers community-hub services to local areas, including the nearby New Farm Neighbourhood Centre.

Amazing river views too

Talking to Raex, you can't help but catch his enthusiasm and excitement about Barko & Co. A riverside location, ethical coffee, all your favourite menu options and active social values - what's not to love?

So from 7.00am next Tuesday, 7 May, if you're on the boardwalk, pop into Barko & Co for a mid-jog coffee!
