Stop for breakie at Barkly Bike Festival in Brunswick
Barkly Square is again hosting Brunswick's favourite bike event, Barkly Bike Festival on Sunday 27th October 2019. The event kicks off at 9.00am until 3.00pm and celebrates all things on two wheels.
Not only will there be lots of fun, but there will also be free bike safety checks by Ray's Bicycles for every visitor; this is an important aspect for any bike rider. The program starts with a BBQ Breakie Fundraiser in support of the Amy Gillett Foundation and continuing with Q&A session hosted by Australian SBS Tour de France commentator Matthew Kennan. As well, there will be Tour de Barkly photobooth, performances from the National Institute of Circus Arts, free smoothies from Bike n' Blend for the first 200 attendees, giveaways and live music. Purchase the latest gadgets and gears for your bike from Bicycle Marketplace.
The Amy Gillett Foundation was established in 2005 after Amy was killed in July of that year while she was cycling in Germany with the Australian Women's Cycling Team. The organisation's core mission is to reduce death and injury to cyclists on our roads. In the year ending June 2018, there was 1,222 cyclist's deaths and the numbers seem to be increasing. The Gillett Foundation are working with road safety professionals and connecting with science and research to promote road safety for all who use them.
During the event, the Transport Accident Commission will give an interactive driver-rider presentation demonstrating and educating visitors on maintaining a safe distance on the roads. This is extremely important for the motorist as well, as respect for each person using our infrastructure is crucial.
This education and informative event will be held in The Laneway, Marketplace, 90-106 Sydney Road, Brunswick. The event is free. For more information, please call 03 9385 8200.
