Have a gourmet hot dog while crossing the Victoria Bridge
Late last year, the Brisbane City Council opened up the old Victoria Bridge Abutment on the South Bank side of the river to visitors and joined it to the new Victoria Bridge by way of a metal catwalk. Now, you can get coffee and hot dogs on the bridge too!
The Victoria Bridge Abutment with Barker's Hot Dogs
A permanent coffee cart with hot dog stand has recently opened up on the new-to-old bridge catwalk called Barker's. There is some outdoor seating with umbrellas for shade set around the Abutment, and the coffee cart does have lighting. Also on the Victoria Bridge Abutment there are a few historical plaques describing the history of the river and its river crossings, and some seating. The views of the river are quite striking set against the old stone bridge construction, and juxtaposed with the new, modern bridge.
Barker's Hot Dogs coming from the City side of the Victoria Bridge
Around 6pm I was lucky enough to the last hot dog of the day. They are $7 each with a choice of sauces and various fillings. I was impressed by the wide selection of American hot dog inspired sauces such as hot sauce and German mustard, plus the usual fare like tomato and barbecue sauce. I found the range of fillings to be unique and exciting, including chopped tomatoes, fried onion, relish, pickles and even fried chips sprinkled on top. You could choose as little or as many toppings as you want. The hot dogs are quite artistically presented with the sauces zig-zagging across the dog, exactly like American hot dogs, and the contents didn't seem to fall out while eating it. And besides, they supply a sturdy paper carton to carry it in anyway.
Delicious Looking Hot Dog with Sauce and Onion
The staff were quite friendly and we even struck up a light conversation while he made the hot dog - the onion was cooked fresh and it was nice to be able to watch the hot dog being made and decorated right before your eyes.
