Bare Rock Track at Cunninghams Gap

This 12.4 km track in the Main Range National Park at Cunnighams Gap provides the most spectacular views of the Scenic Rim.



I recently wrote a list of Essential Hikes around Brisbane , but unfortunately didn't include this track as it had been closed for a while. Now that it is open I would definitely recommend to put this hike on your list of must do hikes around Brisbane.

The starting point is at the Cunningham's Gap car park along the Cunningham Highway where there are toilet facilities and a number of tracks, including Mt Mitchell which I previously recommended as the track around Brisbane with the best views. However I would recommend Bare Rock as a better hike. The hike starts from the car park near the map board.



The walk is well marked and while there are several branches off the track it is very difficult to get lost. The track is mostly uphill however is not particularly steep until a last short section leading up to bare rock. While there are numerous warnings about sheer cliffs at no time does the walk feel dangerous.



The track takes you through varied terrain with numerous lookouts and views of Mt Mitchell and Fassifern Valley. One worthwhile side track is to the base of Mt Cordeaux. There is also a side track called Morgans Walk. Most people skip this as it lacks any worthwhile views.



Bare Rock itself provides the best views of the scenic rim and is well worth the hike. It is also a great place to stop and enjoy your lunch and take in the views.



Post hike you can enjoy a stop over in Aratula, with a choice of two popular coffee shops and a pub. We usually stop at the One Stop Cafe for coffee and cake, and pick up some locally grown fruit and vegetables at the nearby fruit shop.
