A few short blocks from La Jolla shores beach on Avenida De La Playa are a range of lively restaurants. Saunter along the pavement (sidewalk) through the outdoor tables and make sure your stop at Barbarella.
Before I tell you about the delicious food and great service, I should explain the unusual photographs. A number of years ago, Barbarella put up a few decorations for Halloween. Each year thereafter more have been added and now in the run up to this spooky celebration the restaurant is taken over with the weird and wonderful. It's definitely an unusual experience and although scary, my two year old was fascinated.
The food at this Italian bistro is fresh, straightforward and tasty. I really enjoyed my pepperoni pizza from the wood fired oven and my friend's salad was full and flavoursome. Pizza, pasta and steaks are the mainstays but they're also known for their whole fish cooked in the pizza oven. The open kitchen also adds to the ambience.
Barbarella have three seating areas. Inside, the restaurant is set with crisp white table clothes but still retains a relaxed atmosphere in part due to the great waiter service. You can also dine on the terrace which would be a good spot for a romantic dinner or relax at a pavement table and observe the laid back Californians making their way back from the beach.
Service at Barbarellas is great and on my visit the waiter couldn't have been more helpful. We had two active toddlers and a baby. High hairs appeared immediately along with paper and crayons. They were also quick to bring the kid's orders so the adults could relax and peruse the menu.
