When you think of Mexican food, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's all about tacos…

Before I tried Bar Patron by Rockpool, I was the same… but now I know Mexican cuisine has so much more to offer.

Situated in the heart of the CBD, Bar Patron by Rockpool is one of those places that should be on your list of eateries to try in Sydney. Not only does it boast beautiful views over Sydney Harbour but it has some of the most authentic Mexican food I have tried in this city so far.

From soft lobster tacos to delicious chicken enchiladas, Bar Patron showcases the best of Mexico City and surrounds. It does a great job at blending both authentic and aromatic ingredients to come up with a unique mouth watering menu.

We were lucky enough to be invited to an exclusive taste of the traditional Yucatan food night, which draws on native, European, Caribbean and Middle Eastern flavours.

Head Chef Axell Torres created an innovative, four-course food adventure to bring a bit of Mexican flavours to the heart of Sydney.

Firs,t we tried the XEC, a crunchy, spicy, citrus salad in slow-cooked pork, marinated in achiote and finger limes. This was my favourite dish, an absolute burst of flavour from the beginning. Especially, if you love crispy pork.

Next was the yuzu-infused broth with duck breast, couscous and micro herbs. The duck just melts in your mouth, cooked to absolute perfection with a slight crisp in the skin.

And just when we thought it couldn't get any better, we were served a delicious BBQ pork chop with burnt lemon, salsa martajada, herbs and avocado. Spicy, sour and sweet all in one - an explosion of tangy flavours.

Last but not least, dessert. A traditional Horchata, which is a drink made from rice milk, vanilla and cinnamon, served with coconut ice cream and rice two ways: Korean rice cakes, and crispy rice with tapioca pudding. A sweet treat, like nothing you've ever had before.

It's not every day you can say you've had traditional Mexican from a chef who knows the ins and outs of the cuisine. It delivers abundant riches in terms of flavour and unique ingredients.

If you're after a drink, you've also hit the jackpot.
There's a lot to choose from but the millionaire's margarita, made with top-shelf tequila and pearls of finger lime for just $100 a glass, is a must try.

Bar Patron by Rockpool brings an air of sophistication to Sydney's Mexican dining scene and now it's become my go to for delicious food and classic drinks.
