From the rainy street, the tucked away bar didn't seem to have much to offer on a Saturday night.
As I walked down the stairs and through the single door, I found a wonderland of young, happening people with classic outfits and Instagram-worthy hairdos. I soon found out this is not where you head for a quiet beverage on the weekend; this is where you come, dressed to the nines, for some atmosphere.
Bar Lafayette is self-described as an "Artisanal cocktail bar". Brown Chesterfield couches and Renaissance portraits support the style of the small site, along with matching chandeliers and vintage lamps. The decor is exquisite, with the aesthetic running throughout the entire venue. In the function area, there is an entire wall made of transparent glass, opening up to a classic staircase. Even though the bar is sunken into the ground, this technique opens up the room, avoiding any feels of being cramped and stale.
I was there for a birthday party and even though the crowd in the packed venue may have drowned any music out, I could still talk comfortably with the people around me. The bar line was never long, and extensive range of options was available. I recommend the charcuterie board.
Hidden in the urban alleyways and underneath the recently renovated Perth Technical School of Brookfield Place, exposed brick and an outdoor elevator hug the edges of the bar. Just off Saint Georges Terrace, Bar Lafayette is very conveniently located, making it a great place to start off or finish your night.
