La Piazza at Top Ryde City is a strip of restaurants and cafes that serve a variety of meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner and anything inbetween. During the summer months, it's lovely to stroll along this open-air piazza, consider dining options and be seated outdoors in the fresh air to watch others amble by. During winter, these same businesses will invite customers to sit inside within the warmth of foodie heaven.

Bar Angolo is one of these establishments that is situated on the corner (hence its name Angolo, Italian for angle). This restaurant does not do your regular super supreme, meat lovers or pineapple pizzas. They don't cook pizza on a pizza tray. Their aim is to cook pizza well and for their customers to enjoy the experience. Not only do they cook pizzas, there are also pastas and extremely tasty desserts.

The waiter was very welcoming and showed us to our table. A carafe of water was soon brought to our table while we perused the menu. My daughter ordered the Orecchiette Pasta with pork and duck. Orecchiette is Italian for 'little ears' because of its shape. My husband skewered one of these shapes onto his fork and the four of us huddled together to inspect the piece of pasta. I'm not sure what the waiters would have made of this table gathering around a bit of pasta but we were celebrating my birthday, so all is forgiven. Notwithstanding, this dish was ottimo, the best.

My husband chose the Tortellini Boscaiola. He has eaten boscaiola at a number of other Italian eateries and he said this pasta was very tasty and moist.

The Porkstar Pizza was ordered by my son. He was nodding and smiling while eating this wonderful mix of pancetta, ham, sausage and onions. It was an appetizing dish.

When the Calzone arrived for myself, I was gobsmacked. It was huge. Fortunately for me, I was famished. Calzone is a folded pizza. It enclosed tomata, ricotta, salami, ham and scamorza. Scamorza is an Italian cheese and the combination of these elements were superb. I had to wrestle the calzone from my family or there would have been little for me to eat.

Desserts were next. Creme brulee is often my first choice at restaurants and it was no different this time. The Vanilla Brulee had the combination of chocolate and raspberry which often make good team mates. This brulee was delish.

Daughter ordered the cannoli which was filled to order. There is a choice of ricotta, vanilla or chocolate filling. She chose the chocolate. It was yummy but as she worked through the filling, she found the chocolate taste a bit overpowering, however, she managed to finish this dessert.

My son ordered the waffles. They have about eight varieties of waffle desserts such as banana waffles, oreo waffles, bacio waffles, mixed berry waffle. He chose the mars bar waffle with hazelnut gelato, chopped mars bars, chocolate sauce and caramel sauce plus roasted hazelnuts strategically placed around the waffle. It was an impressive, lip-smacking dish. This was the highlight of our desserts.

Bar Angolo also does takeaway pizzas, pastas and desserts and I noticed a steady stream of customers collecting their take-home meals. The staff were friendly and courteous. I will definitely make a return visit to this restaurant.
