Bar 9 may sound like a bad 70s nightclub, but you're more likely to head here to cure a hangover, rather than cause one. It's one of Adelaide's most popular cafes, and it's not because of the wall murals, tasty food, or charismatic baristas. Sure they have all that, but Bar 9's popularity rests on the quality of it's coffee.
They claim their coffee comes down to "state of the art machinery, passionate baristas, multiple brewing styles, and some damn amazing coffee." Whether you're a bit of a coffee snob, a caffeine addict, or just a casual coffee drinker, it is rare to find someone with a complaint.
The cafe is open Monday to Friday 7:30am-5pm and Saturday 9am-2pm. You can enjoy brunch throughout the day, think muesli, muffins, and toast. Of course they all come with plenty of delicious toppings. Try the simple raisin toast with butter and cinnamon sugar, or a scrumptious english muffin with vanilla bean mascapone, frangelico macerated strawberries, basil, and toasted hazelnut.
At lunch the menu includes burgers, slices, turkish bread, and more. Or you can indulge your sweet tooth and try some of the cakes and pastries on offer. Don't expect the usual cafe fodder that you find at places like BB's or Gloria Jeans. The folks at Bar 9 care about their food too, and make sure that they're sourcing seasonal produce, full of fresh flavours.
There are tables to suit the big and small. You get the feeling it's a family friendly place, especially when their youngest staff member is yet to start primary school. Bar 9 definitely has that 'cool' vibe, that some might find a bit intimidating. Once you sit down and start enjoying your coffee it's something that easily passes.
If there was one downside to Bar 9 it would be the location. Glen Osmond Road isn't Adelaide's easiest or most aesthetic street. But, if it wasn't for places like Bar 9, our suburbs would be a little less fun. They've just moved into a larger space, directly across the road from their old place, so keep your eyes on the right side of the road when you're heading from the city.
Great coffee in a great space, this is a place that should be added to every Adelaide local's little black book.
