From the moment you step inside bar 1880, you are whisked away to an earlier time among the newspaper printing presses of the 1800s. Climb the creaky wooden steps up to the Press Room, bedecked with copies of the Bulletin, which used to be printed in this building, and a historic printing press.
Dark, moody, with splashes of light pooling on each table from an old-fashioned table light, this is a fantastic place to hang out with your mates and try a few premium cocktails after work/before a show/whatever reason you want to come up with.Steeped in history, the atmosphere is lively, with the background music just loud enough to ensure privacy of conversations between the small number of tables inside, but quiet enough to ensure you're not having to bellow to be heard.
The premium cocktails themselves are a treat, with a Signature Cocktail list that includes amazing names like Bubble Cadillac and I'm Still Standing. Alternatively, choose a cocktail from their Forgotten Cocktail list, such as Suffering Bastard, a concoction from 1942 Egypt involving cognac, gin, lime cordial, ginger beer and bitters. We ordered one because the name was great, then several more, because it tasted so good.
I was having some real
Sex and the City vibes sitting here with my three closest gal pals sipping on these beautifully turned out cocktails in elegant glasses and catching up on all our weeks' dramas, trials and tribulations. I would recommend this place just for its cocktails, but the beverage list extends far beyond cocktails, with a handful of mocktails for our teetotal friends and a veritable panoply of spirits, from vodkas and gins, to whisky, absinthe and liqueur. There is something here for everyone.
We decided to have the charcuterie board and the spiced nuts to nibble on alongside our drinks. The meats were delicious and beautifully varied in texture and spice levels, with the accompanying breadsticks and bread slices together with cornichons providing an interesting variety of mouthfeel with each bite.
You could also select a cheese board, consisting of goat's cheese, triple Brie and aged Comte, served with honey, crackers and cheese paste. However, this place is really about its cocktails and beverages. So whatever your poison, you're sure to find it here.Come for the old-world charm, stay for the cocktails.
