I am a natural movement & outdoor enthusiast who is always on the lookout for ways to incorporate physical activity into my life. My perfect day would combine outdoor movement, great food & convivial company.

Banksia Bistro - the south's newest family-friendly eatery
If you like the sound of suckling pig sausage roll, Irish Stew, wagyu flank steak and Honey Jack Daniels Ice-cream with salted caramel fudge and choc honeycomb, hightail it down to Banksia's newest bistro.

Colin Fassnidge (formerly of Four in Hand, the lauded Paddington eatery) and Leigh McDivitt have just opened a new bistro in the Banksia Hotel on Princes Highway. Returning to their pub grub roots, Banksia Bistro serves up honest and hearty dishes which allow the produce to shine. There is a frequently changing Specials menu in addition to the regular menu which features such tempting fare as pork belly sausage roll, grilled or beer battered fish and chips and house-made buttermilk chicken schnitzel.

There is one menu for lunch from Monday to Thursday, and another, more expansive, menu for dinners and Friday lunches.

Recently revamped, the space is rustic, airy and comfortable, with tables spaced nicely apart. If you are as old as I am, you will remember these chairs from primary school.

There is an awesome kids play area so you can enjoy your meal in peace, watching on from one of the tables cleverly positioned above the playzone.

There is a cool circus tent, tunnel, kitchen cabinet, big blocks, train set, blackboard and chalk, and a big screen TV. There's also a cool foosball table for older kids.

The fleet of high chairs ... obviously this place is family friendly. There is a baby changetable in the accessible toilet.

I enjoyed the grilled fish with Cos and fennel salad.
Although the option of fish and salad was not on the menu, the service was friendly and accommodating when I requested the salad instead of fries.

Banksia Bistro is a couple minutes' walk from Banksia train station or around 12 minutes' walk from Rockdale station.

It is the ideal place to catch up with friends over a leisurely weekend lunch and indulge while the kids happily amuse themselves.
