Sensational menu in historic pub
Any trip to Byron is not complete without a meal at the Bangalow Dining Rooms in the Bangalow Hotel. Don't think of the usual counter lunch, though there is a sophisticated pub menu.
The room is open and airy amidst the greenery of aromatic frangipani trees. The menu is more impressive and alluring. My friend opted for the Thai style beef salad with chilli, coriander, peanuts, mint, bean sprouts and ground rice.
Another ordered the wahoo special and was thrilled that the fish was cooked to perfection.
I was torn between the enticing sounding yellow fin tuna linguini, rocket, chilli, garlic, tomato and lemon (tuna served rare), which was recommended and ordered by my friend, a regular at the establishment, with an extensive knowledge of the menu.
However, I went with the Moroccan prawn and fish tagine, chickpeas, olives, cous cous, green harrissa and yoghurt , and was not disappointed. It was spicy and full of flavours blending with the seafood, not overpowering it, and absolutely delicious.
The kids went with the beef and bacon burger, but there is a kids menu with pasta, sausages and mash, and of course, fish and chips.
We went with the locally handcrafted Stone and Wood Pacific Ale, and the beer had quite an unusual zesty, almost citrus finish, which was refreshing in the heat and a perfect accompaniment to my meal.
It is worth noting that the main part of the pub has been preserved in it's original state, while the new extension is sleek and modern. For tourists it's a great way to see the historic Australian Pub in it's glory.
This restaurant exceeded my expectations, even though it had been recommended by two other friends that live in the area. It is well and truly the 'must dine' when in the Byron Bay area. Little wonder this award winning restaurant receives the accolades it does.
