[ADVERT]The Banff Mountain Film Festival is an annual event incorporating a series of short films and documentaries covering mountain culture, sports, and environment. The Australian leg of the festival's world tour is coming to Australia in April - June 2014 and will be playing in all capital cities and many major regional centres (see the list below). Venue details are available on the website .

There is a rigorous process to have a film accepted into the festival, with approximately 350 films vying for a place each year. From those, the top 60 or so are chosen by a pre-screening committee to be shown at the week long festival in Canada. The international film festival jury chooses the best films and gives category awards including Best Film on Mountain Sport, Best Film on Mountain Environment, Best Film on Mountain Culture, Best Film on Exploration and Adventure, People's Choice Award.

These award winning films are condensed into around two hours of film with subject matter ranging from remote landscapes and cultures to adrenaline-packed action sports. It is that two hour presentation that is coming to Australian screens.

To give you a flavour of what you will see if you go to this event, here are the outlines of some of the short films:

The Last Great Climb (UK clip, 26 minutes, Best Film - Climbing):

A movie about crazy mountain climbers who attempt to climb the majestic unclimbed Ulvetanna Peak in Antarctica. But they're in the middle of nowhere, miserably cold and a bit delirious.

Sea of Rock (Switzerland, 12 minutes):

A bicycle found lodged on a climbing route in the Austrian Alps inspires two expert riders to follow in the treads of the early cyclists, down the gnarly slopes of the 'Sea of Rock'. Requiring maximum skill and 100% attention, the incredible riding and sheer drop offs will probably have you hanging on the edge of your seat!

Split of a Second (Sweden, 8 minutes)

An up close and personal look at the motivations behind Wingsuit World Champion Espen Fadnes and why he risks everything for the thrill of a few seconds.

This looks like two hours of fun, excitement, adrenalin and terror! Definitely one for the diary. You can buy tickets online .
