Since the launching in 1976 of The Banff Festival of Mountain Films by The Banff Centre in Canada it has become the most prestigious international film competition.
Every year over 300 of the best short films and documentaries are presented at a week-long festival screening the most thrilling mountain adventure and exploration films about mountain sports, culture and the environment. As a part of the Banff Mountain Film Festival official world tour, the selection of award winners and audience favourites visits 390 communiies and 35 countries.
This festival features a world first with an adventurous trio of paddlers, a long hike in a desert, attempting new climbing routes in Venezuela and tackling what seems an impossible mountain bike ride with skill master Danny MacAskill. There are exciting scenes where you will unite with an unrelenting climber who ventures up the infamous Totem Pole in Tasmania, join a crazy band of French musicians who perform over a cavernous gorge, ski remote and untouched slopes in Iran, and join a crew of inexperienced but persistent paragliders as they fulfil their dreams of a life time.
This year the selection of more than 2 1/2 hours of mesmerising cinematography in some of the most remote and wild locations of the world also includes adrenaline-packed action sports. Audiences will experience through the camera lenses some of the most enthralling scenes of the most accomplished climbers, mountaineers, paddlers, skiers, snowboarders, mountain bikers, explorers and adventurous filmmakers. Their captivating films are bound to have you clinging to the edge of your cinema seat.
