Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world, due to a unique rhizome-dependent system. Certain species of bamboo can grow 35 inches within a 24-hour period. Bamboo is now being used for building materials and has a higher compressive strength than wood, brick or concrete.

Bamboo Land Nursery & Parklands, Torbanlea

A mere 20 minutes drive north of Maryborough, between Howard and Torbanlea many signs depict the way to Bamboo Land Nursery. Leaving the Bruce Highway and only approximately two kilometres further, I came across 10 acres of the tallest Bamboo I had ever seen along with Gingers and Heliconias encompassing the property.

Walking around the pathways is nothing short of sheer delight

If nothing else, the walk around the network of paths is a delight in itself as 100 species of the World's finest non-invasive bamboos provide a canopy effect. Plaques at ground level display names of all the species, which can assist in your choice of purchase.

Plaques depict the names of all plants

Hand held clipboards displaying prices of plants are on a stand as you walk in. These are provided so you can note the prices of each plant as you walk around the parklands. Another notice also suggests you use the complimentary insect spray before venturing further into the garden. If you know what plant you want, then you can go directly to the nursery; however as the sun sparkled down through the foliage and the temperature was evidently cooler in the garden, I decided a stroll around the abundant greenery was just what I needed on a hot summer's day.

Located on the fresh water Burrum River, visitors are welcome to bring a picnic to eat at the many picnic tables along the river or throughout the garden. Tea, coffee, cold drinks and ice creams are available and busses, tour groups, weddings and other functions are also welcome.

Bamboo socks in the gift shop is just one of the unique items for sale

This versatile plant doesn't just come in plants for the garden, a small gift shop is located near the entry, which has an extensive range of bamboo products, which included to my surprise bamboo watches, toothbrushes, socks, calculators, phones cases etc. Or perhaps you may wish to purchase one of the many bamboo screens on display for purchase.
