If you need to take a sabbatical from skyscrapers and concrete for a while, Easter Saturday is as good a day as any to head to the Balnarring Picnic Racing Club for their special Easter weekend race on the 4th of April 2015 from 1pm onwards. The racecourse is located in Coolart road, Balnarring; drive in and find yourself a shady spot to park. Tickets are sold at the gate and will be $10 per adult, with children under 18 years of age going free.
Located on the picturesque Mornington Peninsula between Port Phillip and Western Port Bays, it's only an hour from Melbourne and close enough to explore many nearby wineries, restaurants and popular beaches.
This family oriented event is all about being in a relaxed atmosphere set in a scenic rural environment with activities to keep the kids happy as well. Bring your picnic baskets along and perhaps something to keep you dry, what with the unpredictable weather we're having.
The focus of this not-for-profit club with around 400 members is to promote picnic racing as something enjoyable for the family where even the novice can have a fun time. Visit the mounting yard when the horses are paraded, then you could stop at the bar and visit the food stalls if you wanted to wet the whistle and get that extra bite to eat. For the adults, the fun is in trying to back a winner to win lots of 'dosh'. There's a full TAB service and 'punters club' provided.
There'll be 6 races on the day with the 1st one starting at 1pm (last race at 4.30pm) and the rest following approximately 40 minutes apart. There'll be give-aways, so if you're one of the first 80 cars to arrive, you'll get a sports bag filled with a towel and lunchbox (empty I'm afraid). With an expectancy of around two and a half thousand punters (there were nearly 7 thousand on Australia Day), you'll have to be quick. There'll be other give-aways throughout the day for the little ones as well.
Speaking of which, for the kids there'll be a jumping castle, face painting and a merry-go-round. There's a cost associated with these activities. There'll also be an Easter egg hunt after 1.30pm. There's definitely a lot of fun to be had at this affordable special event. Check out the video below which will give you more insight about these events/meetings that run throughout the year. Check out the website for more information and we'll see you at the races.
