"Please, Sir, may I have some more, please? - Oliver Twist. Dickens, Charles (1812-1870). You asked, and it's being delivered. Ballarat's beloved
Best Pie competition returns with 28 different pies throughout, and sees 27 local restaurants, cafes and venues, vying for the 2024 title. This event takes place across the city from
1-31 August this year and will see 10 more entries including first-timers The George Hotel (Beef Rendang Pie); Boatshed Restaurant (Seafood Pie); Itinerant Spirits (Wild Orchard Apple and Vansetter Vodka Pie); and The Shared Table (Garden Harvest Pie). Last year’s Grand Prize Winner Flying Chillies is back and will try to take the title again with its

Pulled Venison, Mushroom & Gallivanter Gin Pie at Nolans Restaurant
From twists on traditional flavours to ambitious creations, there will be pies to satisfy all taste buds and palates - savoury to sweet. For the list of participating venues and pies, see the
website or your
Pie Map . Salivate over 23 savoury and 5 sweet pies. There's something to suit everyone's taste. It's going to be a tough job for the judges eating every single pie to pass judgment on, but someone has to do it.
Think Sher Wagyu and Grampian Shiraz Pie at Beechworth Bakery; a great Beef Filet Mignon at 1816 Bakehouse; Braised Duck and Shitake at Grainery Lane; Pulled Venison, Mushroom and Gallivanter Gin Pie at Nolans Restaurant. Of course, I'm mentioning the ones that are making me salivate and having been to Nolans, it brings back memories. Loving seafood, prawns, and scallops in a creamy chardonnay sauce at Boatshed Restaurant sounds wonderful too. When you look at the aforementioned sites, there's enough there to drool over, you'll be glad you have the whole month of August to taste test them all, while supporting local venues and produce. Again, having been to the Itinerant Spirits distillery, it's good to see they're participating with a sweet wild orchard apple and Vansetter Vodka pie. I'm feeling a little tipsy just reading it - in a good way. Among the sweets there's one with native fruits and red berries wrapped in a handmade lemon myrtle pastry, finished with a sweet crumble as you can see in the image below. There are some seriously good pies competing and the good news is that you benefit, coz everyone will be putting their best foot forward to win, and you'll be tasting the best of the best.
