Located opposite Lake Wendouree , the has been part of Ballarat's history since the nineteenth century. George Longley, the first Curator of the Gardens, lived with his family on-site in a test for two years while bushland was cleared, earning a salary of three pounds a week.

Nowadays, the Botanical Gardens covers 40 hectares and is home to an enormous array of flora and fauna. It also contains pagodas, a statuary pavilion, wishing-well, craft cottage, gift store, ponds, playgrounds and numerous sculptures and specialised gardens.

Once a year the gardens are dressed up for the Ballarat Begonia Festival , which attracts nearly 30,000 visitors.

In particular, look out for the Adam Lindsay Gordon Craft Cottage, which has a range of old-fashioned and modern crafts for sale, and the Robert Clark Conservatory, a beautiful little cafe nestled among cascading flowers.
