The artwork is not to be taken seriously
The Bald Archy Prize was created in 1994 as a spoof of that more serious Art Competition, The Archibald Prize. The Bald Archy provides artists of all styles and standards an opportunity to create portrait paintings of humour, dark satire, light comedy or caricature.
Although created as something of a joke, the Bald Archy Prize has become an icon on the Australian art calendar, particularly because of the absurdist nature of the event, calling for irreverent comic and satirical images of well-known Australians. Winning subjects from previous years include Shane Warne, Pauline Hansen, and Cardinal George Pell.
The Bald Archy is known internationally as the only art competition in the world to be judged by a sulphur-crested cockatoo named Maude, which about sums up the quirky nature of this competition.
This touring art show will be available for viewing at Cleveland's iconic Grand View Hotel from the 3rd of July till the 29th of July. The Grand View, renowned for being the oldest licensed hotel in Queensland, was built in 1851 and retains its old world charm. Only a 30-minute drive from Brisbane CBD with spectacular views across Moreton Bay to North Stradbroke Island, this venue coupled with cake and coffee or a hot lunch makes for a great day out.
