It's a lot easier to write about a bad holiday house than a good one, which is unfortunate because there's precious little to complain about with Balcony on the Bay.

The house is on the beachfront, making for views across Geographe Bay and a short stumble to the water.

The decor is neutral and modern with no tacky dolphin-by-sunset artwork to poke fun at.

The kitchen is well equipped, too, with that rarest of beach house commodities - decent knives. The only thing I'd add to its equipment list is a coffee plunger. Luckily, we'd brought our own.

The Dunsborough town centre is a 10-minute walk away, on a car-free beachside path which goes past a playground.

Balcony on the Bay comes equipped with a barbeque, outdoor dining table, dishwasher, full laundry, huge lounge suite, games, pamphlets on local attractions, glass dining table and even linen.

The house has three bedrooms and a rumpus room with a pull-out sofa bed. The master bedroom offers a walk-through robe which would be plenty big enough to accommodate a portacot, if there's a baby in your group.

There is a once-per-visit "service fee" of $180 which covers cleaning and linen, although guests are asked to do the dishes and put out the garbage.

Rates for the house vary between $225-345 a night.
