Baking is a fail proof activity for children – the combination of making a mess and licking the bowl is too tempting for even the most hardcore young boy to resist. Some of our Weekend Notes writers are pretty handy bakers as well, and they've been kind enough to share some of their recipes.

Biscuits are always a crowd pleaser. If you've got any leftover Easter eggs, or even if you don't – any excuse to buy more, right? – this melted Easter egg biscuit recipe is a delicious, chocolatey, gooey treat. Chocolate chip cookies are always popular, or for something a little different, give our jelly bean cookie recipe a try. And every Aussie kid should bake Anzac biscuits at least once in their life.

If you're feeling especially clever, why not make a cookie bouquet as a present for someone special? The hardest part is making sure it leaves the house uneaten.

Moving on to cakes - delicious, moist cakes. Rainbow cupcakes are a little tricky but the end result is amazing, and there is an easy option for the culinary challenged. If you've got a budding Junior Masterchef on your hands, try something a little more complicated with these edible flowers for cakes – or if your child is more likely to burn water, this chocolate mug cake is pretty hard to screw up.

You can even have fun with a packet mix , as Ivana Katz discovered.
