If you are looking for a new kids weekend activity, holiday time filler or birthday party idea head to Brasserie Bread, Botany.

Everybody loves bread. Whether your favourite is crusty bread rolls, sourdough cobs, wholegrain loaves or delicate croissants, Brasserie Bread has it all and the experts are ready to show you how to make it.

We started with my favourite, pizza. After the obligatory washing of hands we headed into their special class room and listened and learned how to smash out the air and knead our lumps of dough.

Topping our circular mounds of dough with tomato sauce, cheese, basil and olives our pizzas were ready to be cooked. Next came the plaited roll. This was a tricky one for our 30 children, especially for the under 6 year olds, but with some help each child had their dough kneaded, folded and plaited.

Into the oven our rolls went as we headed off on a tour of the bakery. This was the most fascinating part as our bakers truly engaged the children and adults in an educational behind the scenes exploration of the wonderful world of bread making.

We learned how they cultivate yeast, where the flour is stored, how the ovens work and watched the bakers make thousands of croissants. The children loved stepping into the minus 17 degrees refrigerator and watched the large machines pump out soft lumps of dough.

We ended our one and half hour visit to Brasserie Bread with our very own show bag full of recipes, complimentary bread rolls and our freshly baked pizza and plaited roll. The bakers kindly gave us extra sour dough loaves as a gift .. we love freebies !

Brasserie Bread very cleverly cater to all ages with their bread making classes and know just how to keep you interested with their hands on classes, intoxicating smell of baking bread in the air and the mouth watering taste testing afterwards. Highly recommended for a unique children's birthday party or adult birthday gift.

Learning to bake bread is better than learning to make cakes. It will teach them how to make something healthy.
