Sewing fun for the family
For a creative and fun family activity head to the Art Gallery of NSW on Friday 8th July.
At the Bags of Colour workshop families are invited to create their own masterpiece - a unique and colourful tote bag of their own design. The workshop is running in conjunction with the Gallery's Frida Kahlo Exhibition and it is hoped that you will be inspired by the colours of Mexico.
This family hand sewing workshop will be run by Trixi Symonds of Coloured Buttons and is designed for mums, dads or grandparents to come along with their children and learn how to sew together.
Trixi is passionate about teaching sewing skills to children and about the benefits it provides them. Trixi has been teaching hand sewing classes for over 20 years and has learnt from experience that children are capable of learning to sew from as young as 3 years old.
Trixi believes hand sewing is beneficial to children by helping to develop fine motor skills, their ability to trust and value their own choices, by helping to build their self-confidence, and giving them an activity that is both highly practical and highly creative and which can be used throughout their lives.
The Bags of Colour workshop is recommended for children aged 5 - 8 years old, working with an adult. Children will create their own tote bag design from an array of colourful felt pieces which will be hand stitched on to the bag.
Trixi adds, "It's great for parents to see what their kids can do. The most common reaction I get from parents at these workshops is total surprise at what their kids are able to create."
The workshop will run for around 90 minutes and all materials for the workshop will be provided on the day. The cost of the workshop is $45 which covers one adult and child (for non-members of the Art Gallery) or $60 for one adult and two children (non-members). The price for Art Gallery members is slightly cheaper. For more information or to book tickets for this workshop click here.
The Art Gallery of NSW is located next to the Royal Botanic Gardens and is only a short walk from the Sydney CBD. For more information on how to get there click here.
If you are unable to make it to this workshop, but are keen to share the joy of sewing with your children, you are in luck. Sew A Softie Day is running from 1st - 16th July 2016. During this period children are encouraged to hand sew a soft toy using easy-to-sew tutorials that will be posted online daily. For more information about Sew A Softie Day click here.
