Burgers the Yanks would be proud of

As I was out 'taking the air' during a stroll along the Esplanade at Hervey Bay the other day I suddenly became quite hungry. Fortunately for me, when the hunger hit, I was on the walking path directly across the road from Badger & Brown's Burgerie. I crossed over and joined a fair sized late, lunch-time crowd in this fully licensed Burgerie at 449A The Esplanade, Hervey Bay.

The service was fast and pleasant – as opposed to me being slow and confused as I took a bit of time going through the wide array of hamburgers available. The choice of burgers you can have ranges from the inclusion of a beef patty, chicken, calamari or lamb. There is even a selection of 'vegetarian hamburgers' – I thought that was a bit 'oxymoronic' until I saw what was on them and even pondered having a non-meat hamburger. Prices range from $8.90 to $14.90 for burgers. Combos add an extra $5.50 or $6.50 or you can add some extras, such as, Candied Bacon and Haloumi Cheese ($3.00), fried egg or grilled mushrooms ($2.00) or, my favourite, McClure's Pickles ($1.50).

Have a look here and download the menu to see the full selection available.

In the end I thought I would start at the beginning and ordered the Badger Burger with Cheese as a combo with Crispy Onion Rings and a drink from the fridge. The whole lot coming to $16.50.

An inspired selection as it turned out. I had toyed with selecting the 'Chuck Norris' burger but by the time I had finished my meal I was fully topped-up, so if I had tried to take on 'Chuck Norris' I'm pretty sure he would have beaten me quite convincingly as he does with everybody.

Even though the Burgerie was really humming and the lunch-time crowd, that looked like a good mixture of locals and tourists, my burger combo was to hand in quick order.

Badger Burger with Cheese Combo with Onion Rings

A most pleasant aspect of the meal is that it has given me an advantage over my darling daughter. We both love onion rings and she had recently found our favourite – that is, until I tried the Badger crispy crumbed onion rings. She probably won't believe me but these are the best I have ever tried. Big, crisp and juicy; a real joy to saviour.

Like the onion rings the Badger Burger was absolutely full of flavour. Besides the big juicy Angus beef patty it was packed with crunchy vegetables, pickles and a special sauce by Mr Brown (who I didn't meet). When you eat these burgers you need to lean way forward to avoid the juice dripping down your shirt. It is impossible to get through any of the burgers without wiping your hands and face with just one of those paper napkins. For this, Badger and Brownie has a unique solution. Each table has a roll of paper towels that keep on coming as the juice rolls down. Even if you are getting a beating by a Chuck Norris I'm sure there will be enough towels there to clean up the mess.

Plenty of towels so dribble the juice as much as you like.

Badger & Brown's Burgerie is open from 11.00am until late every Tuesday to Sunday – closed on Mondays. It is fully licensed and has a wide selection of drinks to have with your burgers.

If you are around Hervey Bay on a Wednesday you should make your way to Badger & Brown's as you can get whatever burger you like for just $10 – except for Chuck Norris; he's not going cheaper for anybody (and who's game enough to argue with that?).

There are times for other specials, such as, Sunday's being $1.00 Buffalo Wings day. There is also a fantastic menu for the littlies that includes choices of burgers and calamari that range from $5.90 to $9.90.

I really enjoyed my lunch at the Burgerie; nice people, relaxing ambience and fantastic food all combining into a wonderful tranquil experience making up my break away in Hervey Bay.
