They’ve done their bit - Let’s do ours
ANZAC Day falls on a Sunday, April 25th, this year. On ANZAC Day Eve, Wounded Heroes, a frontline support organisation for current serving ADF Members, Veterans and their families in financial crisis or at risk of homelessness, are hosting the Backyard Sleepout.
The idea behind this event is to raise both funds and awareness of homelessness and the risk of homelessness within the Veteran community on a national level.
Wounded Heroes are contactable 24 hours a day/7 days a week. The majority of assistance that they provide is to veterans experiencing mental health conditions, including PTSD, anxiety and major depression. They are the first contact in an emergency situation and support including calling an ambulance for veterans experiencing severe panic attacks and attempted suicide.
And for those of you, like me, who are not comfortable sleeping with the possums, it's not necessary to "rough it" completely for the night. You can sleep on the living room floor or curl up on the sofa for the night. It's about experiencing what approximately 5,800 of our veterans are experiencing on any one night. We'll be turning everything off and sleeping in the backyard but with a doona, a log fire and a BBQ tea. Maybe a bottle of red.
For those of us with kiddies, this event would seem an ideal learning tool about compassion. Spare a few dollars and a thought for those vets sleeping rough, then wake up with the new dawn for a hot brekkie after paying respects to our defence force, past and present, and peacekeepers.
The $5 fee for each person sleeping out at home or in your backyard will go directly to those veterans and some with families who need it most. You can donate here.
The Backyard Sleepouts are small, closed events that you organise for family, friends, colleagues, or your local community group.
