"Wounded Heroes is a national non-profit organisation that provides support to Australian servicemen and women and their families, to ease the financial, emotional and personal hardships of contemporary military life." - from Wounded Heroes website

What makes Wounded Heroes different from other organisations that assist our ex-service personnel? They are often the first responders to support our homeless veterans, as well as the partners of veterans, where assistance may not be immediately available.

Here are some frightening statistics:

Veterans and their Families Assisted from October 2019 to March 2020

Veterans assisted. 316
Provision of food. $22,800
Accomodation costs. $67,000
Utility costs. $22,000
Medical Expenses. $ 6,000

For further details about the programs run by Wounded Heroes, go here.

I'm sharing this information because Wounded Heroes' major fundraiser - Exercise Stonepillow - will be focusing on homeless veterans this year and held on the Saturday 24th October.

With COVID restrictions, EXSP 2020 will be an at-home event this year. Yes, that's right, we're being encouraged to pitch a tent and sleep out in the backyard for the night. Wouldn't the family just love this experience?

I'm keen. I hail from a military man who never mentioned his experiences in the skies over Germany, being one of those of the stiff upper lip generation. Many friends were Vietnam veterans, and the son-in-law, affectionately known as Boofhead, proudly wears the uniform.

$20 per person for this event makes it much more luxurious and less expensive option than glamping. Close to the bar fridge, no driving home, clean bathroom, a barbeque and with local possums at play, all under the Southern Cross. What's not to like?

The Backyard Sleepout is an opportunity to help both our veterans and ourselves. Wounded Heroes are encouraging photos be submitted from your Backyard Sleepout. I'm just not sure how easy it will be to take a snap of the marsupials at night.

To participate go here. All payments are tax-deductible.

Hi May,
Great article to write for those who didn't know about this event and the ability to help those who have given their support to keep us safe.
