Recreate some of the kids' favourite Side Show Alley games during isolation and beat the boredom. Send them out into the backyard if the weather permits, to give them a break from their devices with these five ideas to get the ball started. Either buy or get the kids to make their own games that they can enjoy while in isolation. They will soon create their own games to enjoy while in isolation and won't complain that they are bored.

1. DIY Home Bowling Alley – Who doesn't like a good bowling game? Either buy a set from an online toy store or get creative by making your own character-themed bowling pins. I love these Minions themed bowling pins and think they would be a hit the littlies, but if Minions aren't their favourite character, create other character bowling pins such as Easter-themed characters. The kids will be entertained while they create their own character-themed bowling pins using different coloured paper, pencils, clue and old tin cans or bottles. If using plastic bottles, fill the bottles up with some coloured water using food colouring for that extra bit of pizazz. Grab the pool noodles, and set up the rectangular laneway and a beach ball or a soft ball and re-create your very own bowling lane. There are many versions to check out online such as the Minions Bowling Game at www.lifeunadorned.com/2015/07/11/diy-recycled-minions-bowling-game-and-minions-party-ideas

2. DIY Cornhole – Create a small bean bag or a bag full of some heavy substance and try to throw the bean bag into the hula hoop on the grass. Small paper plates can be substituted as small bean bags wrapped with twine. Mark out different positions with tape or coloured markers, for children to throw from; some close, some far away, sitting down, standing on the trampoline or a step for example. If feeling consciousness to make one a little more advanced then check out www.rogueengineer.com/diy-cornhole-board-plans.

3. DIY Ring Toss or Quoits/Coights - Our favourite Aussie larrikin Russel Coight may be a bit absent-minded, but this classic game is a favourite with any child and adult. Make tossing rings from paper plates or plastic soft drink bottles and wrap them with twine or string. Use either a cricket stump or make your own target from old toilet roll holders, paper towel holders or you can even make your own wooden targets and paint them different colours. There are many different versions to create such as www.thecraftygentleman.net/2017/08/24/diy-ring-toss-game.

4. DIY Twister- Remember playing Twister as a kid with friends and the neighbours either in the backyard or in the garage. Recreate these fond memories for your kids with this easy DIY Twister kit available at www.designeddecor.com/twister-game. An alternative to a chalk and concrete board is an old white sheet and paint different coloured circles. Another option is to buy four or six different coloured spray paints and paint the circles on the lawn. Create the board using a paper plate and a spinner that you may have from another board game and re-use the spinner. If you are unable to find a spinner, you can buy a spinner from a craft shop such as spotlight www.spotlightstores.com. This game will become a family favourite that can be played either indoors or outdoors.

5. DIY Large Chess Board or Draughts Board – Take Chess and Draughts playing to the next level with the kids, by creating a backyard playing board. Go as big as you like, by investing in pavers and create a permanent Chess or Draughts Board in the backyard. There are many websites that give you step by step instructions on how to create a board in the garden and where to buy chess or draughts pieces. You can be as imaginative as you like with your game pieces and budget isn't a problem, from using garden gnomes, to pieces of leftover wood of different shapes, to pot plants. If you would like a smaller version, why not give the old picnic table a bit of a revamp by painting the game board in the middle and use traditional game pieces.
