Believe it or not, chickens are fast becoming a popular backyard pet. No longer confined to the realm of hobby and chicken farms, small flocks now inhabit many residential backyards.

Happy chooks have scratched their way round Melbourne suburbia, and not just for their endless supply of eggs.

Chickens are interesting, friendly animals and if you have considered building your own hen house out back, the good people at the Wilson Botanic Park in Berwick are offering a short information workshop on Friday 5th June 2015, from 10am to 12noon to help you get started.

For a $10 registration paid to Wilson Botanic Park , you will learn how to best keep chickens healthy and productive in a cost effective, low maintenance and sustainable way.

Information will include council laws, food and nutrition, housing and predator protection, as well as handling and training.

Participants will be given the opportunity to handle hens and discuss the various breeds, including which will best suit your needs.

This workshop is being organised by the City of Casey. For more information you can visit the or call 9705 5200. website or call 9705 5200.

Wilson Botanic Park is located at 668 Princes Highway, Berwick.
