We all know how important these little guys are and that bees matter. Without them, there'd be a huge food shortage as they help to pollinate most of the crops we eat, and many that feed farm livestock. In fact, nearly two-thirds of Australia's agricultural production benefits from bee pollination. Destruction of their natural habitat, intensive farming practices, and pests and diseases are just some of the complex reasons that bee populations are under threat. All the more reason we need to realise that food security needs bee security.

CERES Environment Park needs some of your time to help them with their Backyard Bee Census on the specific date of 14 November 2021, on the advice that it's the best date to do the count. Do sign up to be part of this event. All it takes is 10 minutes to count the pollinators that you can see. Whether you live on a hundred hectares, or live in an apartment and spend time in a nearby park, the Census is a reminder that nature is always nearby. The Census forms part of a wider collection of data for Wild Pollinator Count, helping scientists understand the health of one of the most important links in our ecosystem.

Once you sign up, you'll have access to plenty of educational resources on why bees are important; planting a pollinator friendly garden and more. CERES are looking to sign up 20,000 households, so be sure to share and tell your friends all about it.

CERES run a lot of interesting events throughout the year. Be sure to check it out. From medicinal gardening online workshops to home brewing and more, you'll find more than enough on their event page. Do note that with Melbourne coming out of lockdown, the CERES Nursery is open for outdoor retail from Friday 22 Oct, and online orders and deliveries are no longer available. The Merri Cafe will still be having takeaway, and on Fri 5 Nov it'll open with indoor and outdoor seating for the fully vaccinated. Takeaway will continue to be available. The CERES Organic Market & Bakery unfortunately will be open for takeaway only.
