Wholesome and Nutritious Sunday Morning Breakfast
Back and Forth is one of my friend's favourite North Shore cafes. They called it an "unassuming health-conscious" cafe. I was informed this newish busy neighbourhood cafe gem packs a lot of flavour, vitality and healthy ingredients in its breakfast and lunch offerings. On this recommendation, we decide to visit one Sunday morning and try it out before a gym session.
This quaint little cafe is nestled amongst the leafy streets of Castlecrag, directly opposite the French Ganache Patisserie and Martha's French Restaurant. The baristas were busy making freshly brewed coffee and they generated an amazing energetic vibe to the place.
A good day starts with a good coffee
The wait was not too long for a table but I noticed it was fully packed with diners on the weekend. In the end we shared a communal table and ordered our meal at the counter.
Back and Forth Cafe have a small but well thought-out menu, which is good if you are like me and don't like too many choices. The overall tone of the menu definitely leans towards a healthy and nutritious offering, with a plentiful amount of Gluten Free, Vegan, Refined Sugar Free and Dairy Free options.
Essentially the menu offers high quality food with beautiful combination of healthy and clean simple flavours. Of course, if you are after a more traditional breakfast, like the typical bacon and egg rolls, they are available as well.
If it wasn't for a full dinner last night, I would definitely pick the lamb merguez sausages with soft boiled egg with roasted pepper, hummus on rye sourdough ($17); but the roast sweet potato hash served with crispy kale, broccoli, Meredith goat's cheese, pesto and soft boiled egg ($18) sounded absolutely delicious. However, the Life Changing seeded loaf with avocado, tomato, goat's cheese and balsamic ($18) also appealed to me. I refused to keep on looking at the menu, otherwise, I would be tempted to get the Green Bowl served with kale, avocado, broccoli, asparagus, salsa verde, soft boiled egg and quinoa ($18). I thought decision-making would be easy with limited options, but it appeared not to be the case as everything sounded so good.
Deconstructed Acai bowl with Hippie Lane RAWnola and fresh fruit $17
Finally, we decided to be good and ordered something light and healthy. It would not be a good sight at the gym if we weighed ourselves down with too much food.
The deconstructed Acai bowl was served in a generous portion and it was full of amazing colours, flavours and textures! The presentation just looked so inviting .There were 3 large scoops of acai gelato but they were not overwhelmingly sweet. It was served with assorted fresh fruits, such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and freeze dried strawberries. The Hippin Lane RAWnola muesli complemented the gorgeous subtle flavour of acai perfectly.
Every element which was on the plate deserved to be there and they worked perfectly together. The acai bowl tasted refreshing and healthy on the palate and it was truly delightful to eat. We polished the plate clean.
Mean Green Smoothie $12 (Baby spinach, avocado, lime, kiwi, coconut yoghurt & Apple juice)
I also ordered a Mean Green Smoothie mainly because it was loaded with healthy goodness, such as baby spinach, avocado, lime, kiwi, coconut yoghurt & apple juice. My body felt cleansed, detoxed and healthier after this meal.
Back and Forth just opened 3 months ago and already it shines on its own merits with its commitment to wholesome, flavourful and nutritious good food and coffee. I think it will become my favourite regular cafe and somewhere where I can take my health-conscious friends for an excellent feed.
