Bach Out Loud - Contra Concerts

Bach again
Baroque masterworks in an intimate setting, presented by Contra Concerts and Southern Cross Soloists. Curated by Jonathan Henderson.

Holy Trinity Church Hall manages to be a timeless setting. Its painted white brick walls, tiny windows and cruciform floor plan harking back, one suspects, to an earlier life as a simple but beautiful Anglican Church.

The high wooden ceiling and minimalist furnishings gave an enviable acoustic, beginning with the wonderfully mellow cello rendition of Bach's Cello Suite no 3 beautifully played by Katherine Philip, principal cellist for Camerata. There was a rapt and appreciative silence as the capacity audience savoured baroque sounds which have lasted so many centuries and which will outlast all of us.

The oboe sonata in G brought together Alex Raineri whose youthful appearance belied his formidable reputation and Tania Frazer on the oboe.

Once again, superb musicianship and ideal acoustics delighted us - hearing the familiar as if it were for the first time.

Add to cello and harpsichord Jonathon Henderson on flute for the Sonata in B minor played in joyous and celebratory mode, and our spirits, already delighted, were further lifted.

The final Trio in G major was (despite its title) played by all four musicians. It was a tour de force, after a slight hiccup, when one of the musician's i-pad decided to misbehave, fortunately before the music began.

This was a delightful start to the season of Contra Concerts and it would probably be a good idea to book early as Bach out Loud filled the hall - and word of mouth will spread the news that we are in for a treat.
