Experience a different kind of chamber music concert with Bach in the Dark featuring cellist Rachel Scott and a group of guest artists. Held in the crypt of St James' Church, the series bring a unique chamber music experience that is engaging.

Rachel Scott began the Bach in the Dark series in 2009 at Sydney's oldest church - St James' Church. Her visit to a western NSW school led her to think about how she can create a concert where people can stop and just listen. And this is how the series started.

Rachel would be joined by an intimate audience in the crypt with a glass of wine. She would perform in the dark so that nothing distracts them and they would all go on a musical journey for an hour.

This got me thinking as well. As a classical pianist myself, how many times have I put on a CD and just listened? Probably never. I think about all the concerts I've been to and how often was I distracted by the visual aspects of the concert? Probably all the time.

Bach in the Dark intrigues me and I hope to go to one of these concerts one day. If she is playing in a venue near you, why not come and listen? As there is limited seating for each concert, booking in advance is highly recommended. And perhaps bring a cushion as most seating is on wooden church pews.

If you have kids who enjoy classical music, you should bring them along as well. They will enjoy the relaxed, casual atmosphere and the concerts only go for one hour.

Here's what's on for 2014.
