I'm not religious, and I love rock'n'roll, but I'm really excited about hearing Bach's Mass in B Minor live at QPAC next Saturday night.

Presented by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Mass will be sung by some great soloists (more on them later), along with the Brisbane Chamber Choir and the University of Queensland Chamber Singers. It will be big, beautiful and uplifting, I'm sure -- in the way that only works for massed voices can be.

If you're curious to know what I'm talking about, you can get your Bach on with this recording:

I love Bach's works for strings, but I'm not really familiar with his pieces for voice, even though this Mass is famous among the informed.

One of Bach's last works, the Mass for B Minor was finished in 1749, a year before he died. And, even though Bach himself wasn't a Catholic, this grand work is the Latin Catholic church service, set to music.

For those of you who know your classical music, the big names involved in this performance are as follows: conductor will be Englishman Stephen Layton , soprano will be local singer Natalie Christie Peluso , and the countertenor will be international performer Christopher Lowrey . Tenor will be John Longmuir and baritone Laurence Williams.

For two hours, backed by the local choirs, they will share what pretty much everybody in the know describes as one of the world's greatest and most joyous works for voice.

In the lead-up to Easter, it seems a fitting celebration.

And, as Natalie Christie Peluso says in her reflections on the Mass in B Minor, it's music like medicine, a tonic that leaves listeners moved and transformed.

If you'd like to come along and share some of this beauty, enter our competition to win a double pass.

Send your entries to [email protected] with the subject line 'Bach Mass', and tell us in one or two sentences why you'd like to go. Entries must reach us by noon Friday 7 April and you must be free to attend QPAC Saturday 8 April at 7.30pm.
