I am learning all the time. The tombstone will be my diploma. ~ Eartha Kitt

This irreverent picture book was written by Tom MacRae, one of the writers of the television series Doctor Who, and illustrated by Nick Ward. It tells the story of three little trolls, Oink, Boink and Moink, who go out hunting for a human baby to bake in a pie and eat. Unfortunately for them, but fortunately for the baby, things do not go according to plan and (oh, no, spoiler!) they end up having to settle for baked vegetables instead, with "no baby pie whatsoever."

We borrowed this one from the library at first but it was so popular in our house that we ended up buying our own copy. My toddler loved all the onomatopeia (lots of 'sniffing and whiffing') and repetition in the text and I found the illustrations charming. It's always nice to read a children's book with a bit of humour to it. It's a great book for reading to toddlers or for kids who are learning to read for themselves. I give it eight out of ten.

Baby Pie was first published in Great Britain in 2009 by Anderson Press and is available from The Book Depository.
