Any café that serves Borsch, Russian Beef Pancakes and Blintzes alongside your more regular BLT's and Salmon Sandwiches is alright by me!

To boot, these guys make their own gourmet pies on site (you can peek through the service area and watch the pastry chefs at work), and their pastries and breads compete with the likes of Dench Bakers and Loafer in Fitzroy North. It's clear from the moment you walk into Babka that there's a great attention to detail in everything they do: home-made jams catch your eye as you walk in the door, followed by perfectly flaky pastries and decadent cakes which lead your eye to the star of the show – rows and rows of freshly baked breads and pies.

The same attention to detail can be found in their meals, which show a real depth flavour – especially those Russian specialties on the rotating specials board. But don't just take it from me – the almost permanent queue extending out onto the street should speak volumes about Babka. This place has become the Mecca of bakery-cafés in the area.

That being said, it's best to avoid Babka during the brunch rush, especially on weekends, because the jostling of fellow café pilgrims can get a bit cramped and awkward in the small-ish space. But if a late lunch, afternoon coffee or weekday breakfast is on the cards, this is a great place to sit and watch the hustle and bustle of Brunswick Street pass you by.
