Babies Don't Suck: A Survival Guide for New Dads is a 40-page picture book for adults from bestselling Australian children's book author Aaron Blabey, creator of the much-loved children's book series Pig the Pug, The Bad Guys, and Thelma the Unicorn. Babies Don't Suck is an "ABC" book for adults that pokes fun at parenting and is Aaron Blabey's first picture book for adults. It was published by Pan Macmillan on 1 September 2014.

If you read my book reviews you would know that I like Aaron Blabey. I'm a big fan of his Pig the Pug and Thelma the Unicorn books. Babies Don't Suck is a very fun book. It's described as a "survival guide for new dads" but I think it would appeal to anyone who is a parent. It's the sort of book I wish someone had given me when I first became a parent. What I like most about this book is that it is honest. It points out that parenting is a big step into the scary land of adulthood. But don't panic. Everything will be ok. All you've got to do is grab a beer, sit back, and follow the alphabet. Blabey has spelled out everything you will need to know about parenting from A to Z. What I love most about Aaron Blabey's works is how much humour he puts into his illustrations. In Babies Don't Suck his main character looks wide-eyed and petrified as he juggles a glass of wine and an armful of parenting books with titles like "You and Your Vagina" and "You're a Dad Now, Dickhead". On another page, he is dressed like a soldier and fleeing in terror from a giant nappy exploding with poo.

What I like most about this book is that it points out that parenting isn't all exploding nappies and sore nipples. A day will come when your kid will think you're the coolest person in the world and that's pretty neat. The book also gives some pretty good parenting advice as well. Just because you're a dad now doesn't mean that you have to let being a parent consume your entire identity. You don't have to give up who you are or what you want or what you believe to be a good dad. You find space in your life for your kid and other things. It will be a tight balancing act every day but you will manage it.
