Just down Prospect road you'll find Adelaide's only authentic Sudanese restaurant. Babanusa has been bringing Sudanese cuisine to Adelaide for more than 15 years, it's hearty food with rich flavours that is worth trying.
One highlight of the Babanusa menu is the vegetarian food. The menu is dominated by vegetables, lentils and beans. While it isn't a specifically vegetarian menu there is great vegetarian variety across the soups, dips, salads and mains. Try meals like chickpea patties served with stuffed eggplant, vegetables, and salad, or eggplant and lentils served with a sweet potato sauce.
There are plenty of meals with meat as well, including chicken, fish, lamb, and beef. During winter try a warming lamb stew, or the spicy meatballs with fresh tomato sauce, salad, and vegetables. The meals have a distinct flavour. There are plenty of herb and spices and less commonly used vegetables like okra, eggplant and sweet potato.
If you're coming with a large group then it can be worth choosing a banquet, there are regular and vegetarian options available. You'll start with dips and kisra, followed by four different mains, and couscous and rice. Banquets are $30 and $25 per person.
Traditional desserts and drinks are also available.
Mains are all under $20, and you can choose from children's menu options from as low at $5. At Babanusa, it's very easy to have a great night out on the cheap. It's worth sharing a range of dishes to fully enjoy the best of the menu.
The atmosphere at Babanusa really varies. While on some nights it's a quiet restaurant, on others you'll experience the full party vibe with drums, dancing and a general air of celebration. Try to head there on the weekend to get the most out of your night.
