The Aztecs were by far one of the most fascinating of history's great empires. From their famed love of the cacao bean and ritualistic human sacrifice, to the intricate artworks and sculptures, an exhibit on the Aztecs is sure astound.

This April, over two hundred rare and precious artefacts on loan from museums throughout Mexico will land in Melbourne and be on show at the Melbourne Museum. This will be the first time these items will have been exhibited in Australia and New Zealand, outlining the day to day life, the rituals, beliefs and sacrifices of this remarkable civilisation.

It's estimated that the Aztec empire spanned roughly 200 years between the 1300's to their demise at the hands of disease and Spanish conquerors in 1521. At its peak, the capital, Tenochtitlán, was estimated to have housed up to 200,000 people, which is quite a large populace considering the city itself only covered a land mass of roughly 13 square kilometres.

The exhibition showcases a wide variety of artefacts, ranging from sculptures, pottery and jewellery surrounding the pièce de résistance - a scale replica of the the Great Temple. The Great Temple, or Huey Teocalli, was considered to be the centre of the universe to the Aztec. Their religion was of the utmost importance and infiltrated all facets of their existence.

The exhibition has been grouped into six distinctive areas of Aztec life. The groupings cover everything from the migration and origin of the Aztec people, their religion and rituals, royalty, family life, the market places and trade, agricultural systems and war and conquest. A section is also dedicated to the downfall of the Aztecs, outlining the factors behind their ultimate demise.

The exhibition runs from the 9th of April right through to the 10th of August before heading to Sydney.
