Axil Coffee Co is one of the Sydney cafés that stands out from the rest. In my opinion it is a well hidden gem that locals like to keep to themselves. It offers great coffee and extraordinary cafe food, but also the location, atmosphere and service all adds to a wonderful dining experience.
Axil is set in an amazing spot, right on the Kirribilli waterfront with sweeping views back to Sydney. It is a tiny cute cafe is located right next to the Kirribilli wharf station, making the most of its prime harbour front location.
This cafe serves contemporary gourmet food. It is open for breakfast and lunch and coffee in between. On this occasion, I took my friend out for a belated birthday brunch.
The interior design of Axil has a beautiful mix of modern, rustic and vintage touches. There is an inviting sense of space in all aspects of this cafe with lots of natural lighting emanating from every corner. With fresh air and gentle sea breezes, what more could you ask for?
When our order arrived, we were impressed with the presentation and the serving size. My poached eggs were served with housemade tomato chutney, sautéed onion, diced tomatoes, rocket, crumbled bacon, chilli flakes and black salt on toasted sourdough. By the way, Axil's housemade super-tangy balsamic sauce was finger-licking delicious.
The subtleness of the black salt and chilli flakes eaten together with those moreish bacon crumbles just accentuated this dish. It was filling without being heavy and impressive but still simple. Exactly my type of cafe food.
I must say that we were totally blown away at how delectable this dish was!
The Cheeseburger certainly did not dim next to the signature eggs. It was served with a generous thick prime beef mince patty, house relish, pickled cucumber, red onion, mild American mustard, and aged Maffra cheese on a brioche bun.
Initially, we wondered how we would take the first bite. Manners aside, we devoured the cheeseburger with several OMGs of satisfaction.
The buttery brioche bread was the perfect accompaniment to counterbalance the delicious juicy beef patty. I loved that authentic taste of a good beef patty and it was one of the nicest burgers I had since Burger & Rib. The tanginess from the pickled cucumbers and the American mustard worked well together with the aged Maffra cheese. It was a delicious filling dish that put a smile on our faces.
My friend picked well. This was a fantastic dish to have, especially on a rainy day.
We didn't want to leave, so we lingered a bit. It was just a relaxing spot with such a beautiful panaramic water view.
Overall, the food is delicious and the atmosphere is relaxed and easygoing. The price range is affordable for an uninterrupted Northshore harbourview cafe. It is not surprising that it is a very popular cafe, so get there early to make sure you secure the best harbourview table.
