Speaking from experience, adopting an adult animal is a truly rewarding experience.

Not only are you adopting an animal who is often already trained, you are giving a beautiful creature a second chance to find a loving, caring home.

If you've been wanting to adopt an animal but the Christmas budget is already stretched, the Animal Welfare League is giving you the chance with 'Mission Possible - Everyone Home for Christmas'.

Jade Ellis, PR and Communications Officer for the AWL says, "It is heartbreaking for the AWL team to see so many lost and abandoned animals call the Shelter home during a time that is supposed to be filled with love and happiness.

Our new initiative will be around 'Discount Dollars for Days!'

For every day an adult cat or dog has spent at the shelter, that amount will be discounted from their adoption price!"

Jade continues, "Take Rolly for example…. He's a well-mannered and adorable Staffordshire Bull Terrier X, but has called the AWL home for a long 125 days so on adoption day – Rolly would be at least $125 off his price!

Rolly is one of the AWL team's favourite residents – he has fantastic manners, sits and shakes on command plus if you throw his ball up in the air he'll catch it and bring it straight back to you! We hope that through this adoption drive he will be enjoying playing with his new family Christmas Day"

Jade continues, "Whilst the AWL urges people not to give pets as unexpected Christmas gifts, for those who have been considering and are ready to add a furry friend to their family, the Christmas period may be the perfect time.

Many people take time off work and kids are on holidays which can result in having more time to help ensure their new family member is fully settled in their new home and they can start training and socialisation which will be a major benefit for the future."

Jade concludes, "The 'Mission Possible – Everyone Home for Christmas' adoption drive will run from December 13 to 21 and all animals available for adoption are desexed, micro-chipped, vaccinated and health checked."

As a person who has adopted a shelter animal, I can honestly say my cat Nemo had the best personality, was strong, healthy and worth every cent of the adoption fee and more.

Puppies and kittens are just as gorgeous, but this Christmas, if you've been thinking about adopting a new family member, take the time to look at the more mature residents of the AWL; you never know, your best friend might be waiting for you.
