Yes, it's that time again, for Perth people and visitors to watch the thrilling Avon Descent Race. It is WA's unique paddle and power dinghy River race which goes from Northam to Bayswater.

There is the total course which is 124 km full distance race, team relay or a short course. Any of these will be thrilling both to be in and also to watch!

It is a two-day race which follows the Avon River to the upper tidal waters of our Swan River in Bayswater.

And of course, at the same time, there are other events to coincide with this great race. The race will be held on the weekend of 4th and 5th August, 2018.

This year, there are some exciting new partnerships with zero2hero educating and empowering young minds about mental health.

For just the second year ever, there will be SUP competitors in the race, hoping to be the first person to ever complete the Avon Descent on a SUP.

To successfully complete this often gruelling race is not only a challenge for the competitor, but also for the support crews who follow and support their every move.

Therefore any success as a competitor is also a success for the families and individuals who support them. This is a team effort starting with the preparation of the various crafts, through training days, weekends and the excitement of the competition weekend. This year, there is even a "Rookie Racing Team" who will be raising money for the Telethon Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre. The team is Tim Newton and Luke Buttersfield, who are first time Avon Descent competitors raising money for a worthy cause.

The Avon Descent was on their "bucket list", so they decided to make the adventure a little more worthwhile by raising money for an organisation close to their hearts. Read more about this, and how to donate at this link.

The Descent is run in stages, and you can read all about these and the spectator spots at this link.
