I'm passionate about books and the occasional flavoursome coffee. When people mention the old-time saying 'she's like a kid in a candy store' they may as well be referring to me and bookstores.
Avid Reader is unique - predominantly due to their popular in-store events, vast selection of reading material and local popularised café which is open to the public 7 days a week. Books, coffee and great food in one place – what more could an Aussie girl want?
An independent bookstore, the concept for Avid Reader originated when Fiona Stager, Kevin Guy, Verdi Guy and Colleen Mullin realised the need for a specialised bookstore in West End, hence, Avid Reader was created and officially opened in 1997.
They stock a large range of new fiction and non-fiction books on popular topics such as cooking, politics, parenting, history, travel (just to name a few) and a diverse selection of DVDs and CDs.
Special events are held regularly within the bookshop and have proved to be a big crowd pleaser. Book Clubs (of which there are many to choose from) run monthly or weekly and they encourage open membership which means you won't find them kicking you out if you don't turn up for a while. Other events include book launchings and signings for published authors.
The Avid Reader café is open 7 days a week from 8.30am to 4pm. No wonder this place is popular amid the locals. It's comfortable, cosy and air-conditioned (very important for the hot summer days we've been having). Tasty, healthy food at reasonable prices and there's an outside deck if you feel like brunching in the fresh air.
You don't have to buy a book to enjoy their various sweets and savouries, all day breakfast meals, toasted Turkish sandwiches and healthy gluten-free cakes. Their menu is suitable for the vegetarian and non-vegetarian, hosting plenty of unique dishes like the breakfast favourite 'Stephanie's Avocado Toast with feta cheese, fresh mint and chilli' currently priced at $9.
For lunch, grab a toasted cheese Turkish sandwich for only $5 or a sumptuous 'grilled Haloumi with tomato, cucumber, lemon juice and rocket' for just over $8. There is a selection of coffee, black/herbal teas and cold drinks available. If you don't have time to stop and eat, the café will prepare your take-away order. To place an order telephone the cafe on (07) 3846 3422.
