& #9733 ;& #9733 ;& #9733 ;& #9733 ;½ With the mien of a rock star and the technique of a virtuoso, Avital is a stunning performer. LimelightExplosively charismatic. New York TimesWhether performing at the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall or for his fans on social media, the 38-year-old Israeli virtuoso represents a new breed of classical musician, the poster-boy for a revolution centred on the humble mandolin.
The Australian
The first mandolin player to be nominated for a classical Grammy award, Avital has received glowing reviews from his concerts in the Holywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, London's Royal Albert Hall and Wigmore Hall. Name the most prestigious concert venues and Avital has been there and been loved.
This relatively young artist has released three albums on Deutche Grammophon, no less, and commissioned more than 90 new works. He has also perfected the smouldering look for publicity shots and album covers.
We can see for ourselves what the fuss is all about when he tours nationally with the Giocosa String Quartet from 7th to 24th April. Expect to hear Bach and Schumann and a world premiere work by the wonderful Australian Elena Kats-Chernin.
Just as Larry Adler transformed the humble mouth-organ into a virtuoso and versatile instrument, Avi Avital has transformed our perception of the mandolin.
He relishes the moment when audiences grasp just what his instrument is capable of: "
Wherever I play around the world, I feel that for most of the people it's absolutely the first time and there is a great curiosity and a great anticipation, which is wonderful for the concert atmosphere."
Full marks to Musica Viva for giving us the chance to experience a unique musician, paired with the world-renowned Giocosa String Quartet.
It may well be that this will be a concert which will also be a lifetime memory.
