Avarice , by award winning Australian film Director John V. Soto, stars Gillian Alexy, Luke Ford, Alexandra Nell, Pricilla-Anne Jacob and Nick Atkinson. With a run time of 88 mins, it's due in select cinemas nationally on 8 December 2022.

A homegrown thriller, Kate is an Olympic-level champion archer and must rescue her investment banker husband, Ash, and daughter, after they are abducted by a team of mercenaries during a violent home invasion. She must use her archery skills to overcome their captors and save her family.

First of all, this family of three set out on a much-needed vacation with their teenage daughter Sarah to a remote forest house. Kate and Ash are trying to resolve their marital issues which is having an effect on their daughter. Ash confessed to a one-night stand a year earlier and both parties are hoping some time away would help get their marriage back on track. Simultaneously, Ash is quietly celebrating closing a substantial deal with a Shanghai funds manager.

Late one night they are subjected to a terrifying home invasion by a team of mercenaries headed by the fearsome Reed, a cold-blooded psychopath. Reed and her team tie up Kate and Sarah and abduct Ash. Taken to their high-tech secret base, Ash is forced to transfer millions of dollars from his company to various foreign accounts. Meanwhile, watched over at the forest house by an unstable mercenary, Kate must use all her cunning and skills to outwit him, locate and rescue Ash, and save her family from certain death.

Averice is a simple thriller with strong female characters. It's not exceptional but it keeps ticking along at a good pace. The plot is not complicated, and the cast small, making it easy to keep track of both story and actors. Smartly put together and entertaining, a couple of twists keep it interesting. There's not a lot of joy going on, and the film works at keeping it tense and taut, but doesn't quite fully succeed. It could have been more sinister, the thugs a little less cardboard cutouts and the casual performance of Ash and Kate under threat adds nothing to the intensity of the situation.
