The City of Kingston has made a commitment to increase tree cover and vegetation, and as part of this initiative, they are offering a
free plant giveaway every Autumn.
The program allows Kingston residents to collect up to five free tube stock native plants per household. The offer is available without registration and is on a first-come, first-served basis while stocks last. Proof of address is required to collect the plants. This initiative is only available to Kingston residents, and community groups are not eligible to participate.
There will be approximately 1000 plants available at each of the pick up locations. A range of native trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers will be available for selection, including Coast Banksia, Lightwood, Silver Banksia and others.
When and where do I collect my free plants from? Plants to be collected from:
Carrum Indigenous Nursery: Friday 28th April from 9.00am - 1.00pm
Kingston Heath Reserve: Saturday 29th April from 9.00am - 1.00pm
Carrum Indigenous Nursery: Tuesday 2nd May from 9.00am - 1.00pm
Residents can also participate in the Gardens for Wildlife program, a free initiative provided by the City of Kingston, which aims to help develop wildlife-friendly gardens. Interested residents can contact Customer Care at 1300 653 356 for further inquiries.
The program encourages the addition of elements to enhance gardens of any size, such as providing shelter, nesting habitats and food sources for native wildlife. This initiative is an opportunity to increase wildlife habitat in gardens and create pathways for wildlife to move throughout neighbourhoods.
The program offers a free garden assessment,
educational workshops and events and
volunteer opportunities to participate in biodiversity projects. To learn more about habitat gardening, biodiversity, and attracting wildlife to gardens, the Gardens for Wildlife Booklet can be downloaded (

Kingston's
Significant Tree Register is a tool utilised to recognise and safeguard noteworthy trees in our city. Its primary goal is to uphold the leafy character, cultural heritage, history, and ecological diversity of our area. The register includes 84 entries, each carefully chosen for their exceptional contributions to our community. These trees represent our identity and connection to the place, as well as offer shade and shelter for people and animal habitats. Moreover, they aid in preserving the biodiversity of the City of Kingston and enhance the landscape character and amenities of the region.
The development of the tree list was a comprehensive process involving Council Officers and Tri Dimensional Consultants, including the nomination of trees by the community and inspecting potential significant vegetation throughout the municipality. McLeod Trees undertook the second phase of the project on behalf of the Council, completing the review of significant trees as identified within the initial phases of the project by Council Officers in March 2015.
The trees on the Register are regarded as the finest of their species in Kingston and should serve as a benchmark for future trees.
