Cars have been around for more than a century and in a vast country like Australia, have become a sometimes necessary part of life. For some of us, cars mean more than a means of transport. Whether you are interested in history, find vintage cars romantic, a keen student of automotive design or simply love speed, the following are some motor museums and private collections which might interest you.

Motor Museum of Western Australia

Perhaps the most well-known is the Motor Museum of Western Australia. Located in Whiteman Park, the museum has over 200 cars and motorcycles from the late 19th century onwards. Exhibits on display currently include Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull Formula One RB10, a collection of Jaguars (including the world's fastest E-Type Jaguar which achieved 273.697 kilometres per hour), and a large collection of vintage, classic and muscle cars. York Motor Museum

Another well-known Western Australian motor museum, located in Avon Terrace, York, is the York Motor Museum. There are about 50 veteran, vintage, classic and racing cars on display. Among the cars and bikes in the possession of the museum are classic cars from the 1920s and 1930s, American cars from the 1950s and racing cars from the 1970s. West Coast Motor Museum

Just an hour south of Perth, located at 227 Woodland Parade Stakehill, Mandurah, is the West Coast Motor Museum. The collection comprises of over 50 vehicles, some dating back to early last century. Aravina Estate Sports Car Gallery

Aravina Estate is a 73-hectare winery located at 61 Thornton Road, Yallingup. In addition to the cellar door and restaurant, Aravina Estate also boasts a sportscar gallery. The collection is regularly updated and includes Australian muscle cars, and vintage cars and motorcycles. Click here for more information.

Ford Farm Museum

Located northeast of Gidgegannup, the Ford Farm Museum houses a collection of Ford vehicles including vintage Fords, muscle cars and racing cars. Visits must be pre-arranged and enquiries can be made through the website (click here).

Ridley's Motor Museum

Ridley's Motor Museum, located at 9 Holden Close, Bertram, has a collection of approximately 100 vehicles including Fords, Holdens, Chevrolets, and Chryslers. The museum is open by appointment only and enquiries may be made by calling 9419 2980.

The Nuthouse Collection

The Nuthouse Collection is located east of York at Hooper Road, Grass Valley. The private collection, which includes Australia, American and British classic cars, is available to view by appointment for groups of 20 or more.
