Meet Tulip and Brutus. Tulip is a neat and cautious ladybug, and Brutus is a wild and messy stinkbug. But because Tulip is a ladybug and Brutus is a stinkbug, they never play together. Then disaster strikes. Their habitats merge and they're suddenly brought together. Can Tulip and Brutus team up and save themselves?

Welcome to the enchanting micro-world of Tulip and Brutus, a picture book for young children written by newly published author Liz Ledden.

Introducing Liz Ledden
Sydney-based Liz grew up in regional NSW where her world revolved around cubby houses, bike riding, diary writing and trips to the local library. "I was a massive reader as a young child and obsessed with books, from Roald Dahl to Judy Blume, and a whole lot in between," she tells me. "I loved to write my own stories, and went through a spooky story stage, then wrote weird fan fiction mash-ups (think the Babysitters Club meets Sweet Valley High) that usually involved very American names and everyone going to summer camp. So essentially, escaping into stories led me to want to create me own!"

Liz has always written in some form or other. Before publishing her first book, Liz worked in various roles revolving around the written word, from marketing to magazine editorial. But writing was always at the back of Liz's mind since her childhood. When she did a Master of Arts in Writing and Literature a few years ago, she fell in love with the children's literature subjects and that is what spurred her on to pursue kids' writing and getting published.

When she's not writing, Liz spends her time reading. "I'm in a book club with some friends which revolves around adult reads, and may also involve small bars!," she says. Liz also loves food and travel. "I love exploring Sydney's suburbs for delicious eats," she adds. "My other main passion is travel, however that's on hold for now!"

Tulip and Brutus
The story of Tulip and Brutus was inspired by several things. One was Liz's fascination with the micro worlds of bugs. Liz was also inspired by a love of picture books featuring unlikely friendships. "And at the time I wrote the story, I was grappling with kids refusing to eat certain foods, only because they hadn't tried them-and frustratingly, loving them once they did!," Liz says. "This led me to think about the way we can judge things, until exposure makes you think otherwise."

Book number 2
Liz's next picture book for children is due out sometime in late 2020/early 2021. Entitled Walking Your Human, it has been written from the point of view of a dog who has very different ideas to their human about what makes for a fun walk, something in which dog lovers and their human owners might relate to!
