Getting your debut novel published is a momentous task. Winning a 2017 Victorian Premier's Literary Award for said debut novel is ultimately just as rewarding, if not more so.

Luckily for Melbourne author Christian White , he can credit both of these achievements to his name, with his thrilling novel The Nowhere Child, published by Affirm Press .

This Australian crime offering tells the story of Sammy Went, a two-year-old girl who goes missing from her Kentucky home in rural America. Twenty-eight years later, an American stranger approaches photography teacher Kim Leary and drops a bombshell- he has been investigating the disappearance and believes that she is Sammy Went. This is despite the fact that Kim (who teaches at a Melbourne community TAFE), has grown up within a loving Australian family and has never even been to America. Understandably doubtful, Kim brushes off the claims.

But when she starts to look into her past, she is surprised to discover that there may be more credibility to the American's declaration than she expected. Determined to uncover the truth, Kim travels to Manson, Kentucky, and starts to unravel the mystery surrounding Sammy Went's disappearance. With a fractured family and a questionable religious sect thrown into the mix, Kim will have her work cut out for her as she tries to uncover the dark secrets that the town hides, and ultimately discover what happened to little Sammy Went nearly three decades ago…

If you are intrigued by this storyline, have already read the book or are curious as to how this story came about, then you have the opportunity to find out in person from the writer himself.
Christian White will be appearing in Centre Court at Market Square Shopping Centre , Geelong, on Saturday 25 August from 10.30am. Hosted by Dymocks Geelong , he will be discussing his award-winning debut and will also be holding a Q&A session with audience members, before signing copies of his novel for fans.
