As you may or may not already know, 2012 is the National Year of Reading . What better way to celebrate than taking part in a challenge that provides much-needed support and promotion to Australian women writers?

Join the hundreds of people who have already signed up and take part in the Australian Women Writers 2012 Reading and Reviewing Challenge. It aims to promote the reading and reviewing of Australian women's writing and to counteract the gender bias in the book industry. You can read more about the origin of the challenge here .

The challenge is perfect for anyone who loves to read. All you need to do this year is read and review books by Australian women writers.

You can choose however few or many books you'd like to read, in however many genres you want. You can choose however few or many books you'd like to read, in however many genres you want. There are different challenge levels to cater for everyone's preferences.

Here are the challenge levels, as outlined on the challenge website.

Challenge levels

Casual:
- Stella: read 3 and review at least 2 books)
- Miles: read 6 and review at least 3 (include at least one substantial book review)
- Franklin-fantastic: read 10 and review at least 4 books (include at least one substantial book review)

Dedicated:
- Set your own goal
- Combine with another challenge: e.g. Bookdout's Eclectic Reading Challenge , Booklover Book Reviews' Aussie Author Challenge , or the GoodReads Aussie Readers' group's Aussie Author Challenge with a Twist , or any other challenge that you know of.
- Compare the books you read to the Love2Read criteria of the National Year of Reading's 'Our Story' campaign.

Genre challenges

Purist: one genre only
Dabbler: more than one genre
Devoted eclectic: as many genres as you can read

To join, simply go to Australian Women Writers 2012 Reading and Reviewing Challenge and follow the detailed but easy-to-follow 'How to Join' instructions.

Reviews can be written on your own blog if you have one or wish to start one, you can join the GoodReads group , or for those wanting a fuss-free challenge, you can even just write your reviews in Facebook notes.

The challenge is on until 31 December, but your challenge will end when you finish reading the number of books you've committed to. As you'll see in the instructions, when you're finished, simply add your name in the appropriate box on the website and you will be added to the list of people who have completed the challenge.
