In its 11th year, the Australian Tap Dance Festival (ATDF) is back in full swing with events in Melbourne from 24 September to 1 October 2022 at the Jason Coleman's Ministry of Dance, Level 1, 64 Sutton St, North Melbourne. See the Melbourne Schedule here, and get your tickets to the events here; for public events, classes, choreography residencies, and more. Get all the FAQs here.

There's something for everyone, so get in early for a week of all things you love about Tap. If you're wanting to attend the Sounds Inspired Festival Gala, get your tickets through Chapel Off Chapel. The Gala will be held at COC, 12 Little Chapel St, Prahran on Saturday 1 October 2022 at 7pm with a duration of 1 hr and 30 min, inclusive of a 15 min interval. Arrive at least 15 mins before performance time as COC have a strict lockout policy and latecomers may not be admitted.

The Festival is all about celebrating Tap and fosters development, growth, connection and inspiration for all those who attend. Tap masterclasses, residencies and special events are delivered by a high calibre faculty of teachers and performers across Australia and ensure there's something everyone can enjoy; whether it be the sheer mastery of Tap or the athleticism required that's to be admired.

If you're a tap dancer, there are masterclasses and 5-day residencies (performance courses) from beginner to advanced levels, for a range of ages. Coming around just once a year, this is a chance to experience something different and expand your style and techniques at an accelerated rate, in a high immersion environment, in a short span of time. The intensive nature, and access to faculty artists at the top of their field, at one place and time, play a big part in the amazing experience you will enjoy at this festival. Surrounded by like minded people who love Tap as much as you do, really gives you a sense of belonging and family.

If you just love watching dance, the Festival believes everyone should have the experience of the incredible feeling of watching and/or participating in tap dance. There are public evening events to watch including Capezio's Future of Tap - a showcase of what tap shows and repertoire is being created, Jam Night with live musicians, Cutting Contest and of course, the Festival Gala. If you've never tap danced before, there is a free public beginner class! You know the drill. Limited spaces, get on to it.

With wonderful documentaries like Steps of Freedom we tend to associate Tap with the Irish. However, its roots are early American in the 1900s. It has evolved in leaps and bounds and continues to be rich with possibilities and new techniques which the Festival will strive to showcase. If you have any questions at all about the Festival, contact Ella the Event Producer by emailing -

This year's lineup of events will include a free Never Tapped Before (beginners class), Tap Trivia Night, Talking Tap (faculty Q&A), Rhythm Creation (improvisation night with live jazz band), the Future of Tap presented by Capezio (artist showcase), Cutting Competition (tap battle), Learn the Famous Shim Sham and BS Chorus (lesson), Panel discussions about making your way in the industry, international online masterclasses and the penultimate event, the Australian Tap Dance Festival Gala, showcasing the superb skills of a cavalcade of Australian tap dancers in a non-stop evening of music, rhythm and toe-tapping enjoyment, hosted by the charismatic Eden Read.

If you'd like to get up close and personal with ATDF team they're looking for volunteers interested in gaining event experience or just love tap dance as much as they do, to help support the community, provide a memorable participant experience and make the event possible. There are a variety of roles available depending on your availability (between Sept 24 Oct 1) and interests.(ie. social media, stage management, event coordination). Click here to complete the form with details of availability and interests. Volunteers receive 1 free masterclass, a Festival t-shirt, 1 meal if working longer than 4 hours, certificate of involvement and reference for future work if required. If you have any questions, email -

Scour the website, and the schedule, get your tickets, and stay in touch via Facebook for updates and interesting content like finding out a little more about the event and those involved ie. Shane Preston (an original Tap Dog) who will be taking the Under 14s for 'Makin it Effortless' - with kids walking away with a memorable experience performing alongside the faculty at the Gala.

And Leanne Driel, for adults of all levels. She has studied with masters in the USA and will bring Smooth grooves to the style and fun times in creating a little number for the show. Performing is optional. Thomas Wadelton will also be teaching an Advanced and Inter class. Get into the swing, or should I say Tap, of the Festival and get some 2022 merchandise. There are hoodies, Tshirts and singlets to be had, so go ahead and enjoy all the Festival has to offer.
